Josiah Obear (1810-1882) and his wife, Julia Saffery Obear (1813-1901), including items re Obear's 1841 move to Winnsboro, S.C., where he served as rector, St. John's Episcopal Church, and where Julia Obear operated a school for girls. Includes letters, bills, and receipts re school, church, and home expenses; and letters, 1849, re Obear's travels from South Carolina to Randolph, Vt. Also contains literary works by Katharine Theus Obear, and seminar paper, 1963, "The Obear Australian Letters," by John Edmunds. Civil War papers include letters, 1862, re Capt. W.A. Fraser and blockade running, and letters, 1864, between the Obears and son Henry Norwood Obear (1848-1897), a cadet at the Arsenal Academy in Columbia, S.C. Letters to Julia Obear, a native of England, document her family connections in England and Australia. Post war items include letters, 1866-1867, between Obear and Boston judge I[saac] F[letcher] Redfield re economic condition of South Carolina. Winnsboro, S.C. Obear (1878-1957), re his pharmaceutical training in Philadelphia, Pa.; and letter, ca. 1930, Katherine T. Obear, to Horace F.W. Gibbes, re her memories of General William T. Sherman's march through Winnsboro, S.C.--"the house was set on fire three times." Bound volumes include journal, 1834-1841, of Josiah Obear, re his education at Union College Schenectedy, N.Y., early career as a teacher, decision to seek ordination to the Episcopal priesthood, and removal to South Carolina; 5 gradebooks, 1871-1902 and undated, of Katherine Theus Obear's Winnsboro school; "Genealogy of the Ober Family," 1941, compiled by Katherine F. Loring and May Toomey; and 3 photograph albums, undated, of 19th-century images of the Josiah Obear family, friends, and extended family.
